The answer, with the useful detail.

Hardware decoding uses a dedicated media component, while software decoding uses general-purpose processing. Either can work, but their compatibility and sustained performance differ across devices and source formats. A hardware path may reject a particular feature that software can open, while software may lack enough processing capacity for demanding live video. Use only documented player controls, record the original mode and compare the same source. Changing decoding does not repair an unavailable server or increase broadband capacity, so identify the failure stage before trying an alternative mode on the box.

Check which path is actually active

A setting labelled automatic may choose different decoders for different codecs or tracks. Read player diagnostics where available and record the codec, profile, dimensions and frame rate. Do not assume that a hardware-capable box uses its media block for every stream. App implementation and format support matter too. A software mode that displays the first frame has passed one compatibility step but has not yet demonstrated real-time performance. Keep the distinction between opening content and sustaining its full frame rate visible when comparing the two supported modes during normal viewing.

Compare one supported alternative

Save the existing setting and change only the documented decoder option. Keep the network, source and output mode consistent. Watch through demanding motion and the usual failure interval, noting dropped frames, audio continuity, heat warnings or crashes where observable. Avoid inventing CPU figures if no diagnostic exposes them. If software plays but stutters, it may be a limited fallback rather than the best permanent choice. If hardware alone fails on that specific source, provide the player developer with nonprivate media details instead of installing unknown codec packs or changing unrelated system developer controls.

Restore a practical stable mode

Return to the original option if the comparison is worse or inconclusive. If a supported mode works, check another normal source and standby recovery before retaining it. A global switch can help one file while reducing performance elsewhere, so record the reason for the exception. Use official device and player updates for known implementation issues. When the required format exceeds the device capabilities, a legitimately supplied compatible rendition or appropriate device is more useful than repeated mode toggles that cannot create unlimited processing capacity inside a small streaming box during sustained playback.

An example to work through

For example, software mode may open a file that fails on a hardware path but then drop frames during action. That comparison shows compatibility improved without proving adequate performance. A supported lower-demand rendition may be more practical than leaving the whole player in software mode for every source, especially when other streams previously decoded smoothly in hardware.

Questions about this topic

Is hardware decoding always flawless?

No. Supported features and implementation behaviour vary.

Will software mode add missing media?

No. It only changes processing of media the device actually receives.
