HTTP401 when a stream or playlist opens

HTTP401 means valid authentication is required for the resource. Read the explanation, worked example and practical next steps in the Pro Max journal.

Networking

The answer, with the useful detail.

HTTP 401 indicates that the requested resource needs valid authentication or that the submitted authentication was not accepted. It is a server response, so the request reached an HTTP endpoint; a speed upgrade is unlikely to address that response. Check the exact account entry method, supplied address and current session. A playlist request and a media request can fail separately. Avoid repeated rapid login attempts and never include passwords or full authenticated URLs in public support material.

Identify the request receiving the response

Determine whether 401 occurs when loading the playlist, opening a channel or renewing playback access. Those operations can use different hosts and credentials. Record the stage, hostname and time, with private values removed. Check for copied spaces, wrong field placement or an outdated saved profile in the player. A username entered into a field intended for a full playlist URL can create a valid network request with the wrong authentication details, producing an access failure before decoding begins.

Refresh credentials through trusted means

Use the official account page or service instructions to confirm current credentials and the supported login format. If the player supports session renewal, follow its documented process rather than clearing every device setting. Check accurate system time where access tokens depend on it. Do not guess another account password or try to bypass authentication. If credentials were exposed in a screenshot or log, request their replacement through the legitimate account process before continuing ordinary tests with the compromised values.

Compare without multiplying sessions

A permitted second player or official account page can help distinguish a saved profile problem from an account-wide issue, but follow any concurrency restrictions. Stop an existing test stream before opening another. If correct credentials consistently produce 401, provide support with the redacted endpoint, timestamp and player version. Repeated refreshing can create extra requests without fixing an expired session or wrong account format, while changing Wi-Fi bands does not address the server authentication decision already visible in the response.

An example to work through

For example, a channel list may load with saved account details while opening a particular media URL returns 401 after its token expires. Refreshing the supported session could address that stage. Increasing the buffer cannot make the server accept an expired credential attached to a new request.

Questions about this topic

Does 401 prove the password is mistyped?

No. Missing authentication, expired sessions and wrong request formats are also possible.

Should I publish the failed URL for help?

No. It may contain account credentials or a reusable access token.
