Jitter and uneven stream delivery

Jitter describes variation in packet arrival timing. Read the explanation, worked example and practical next steps in the Pro Max journal.

A strong connection is more than a speed-test number. Look at your usual device, Wi-Fi and Ethernet options.
Networking

The answer, with the useful detail.

Jitter is variation in packet arrival timing, rather than simply a low average transfer speed. A connection may deliver enough data overall but leave gaps that a short live buffer cannot cover. Compare playback while the network is quiet and while normal household activity is running. First confirm that the symptom is a loading interruption: uneven movement without a loading pause can come from video decoding or display timing instead of network delivery variation.

Identify what the player is waiting for

Watch whether the picture freezes with a loading indicator, sound continues, or the whole app becomes unresponsive. Media players do not all expose the same diagnostics, so note visible behaviour without inventing a packet-level explanation. Network jitter concerns arrival timing; frame judder concerns presentation timing. A camera pan that repeats unevenly while playback continues needs a different comparison from a stream that stops to fetch more data and then resumes several seconds later.

Reproduce the load that triggers it

Compare a quiet period with the activities normally occurring during a failure, such as a cloud backup, video meeting or large download. Record the activity and whether the television uses wireless backhaul. A speed test can itself compete with playback, so use it deliberately rather than leaving it running throughout viewing. If interruption appears only under a specific load, pause that activity once and observe whether the same programme recovers under otherwise unchanged conditions.

Treat extra buffering as a limited tool

A larger supported buffer can absorb some uneven arrival, but it adds delay and cannot compensate indefinitely for a delivery rate below the media requirement. Record the starting setting and make one moderate adjustment. Compare both freezing and distance from the live position. If the player falls progressively farther behind or still empties its buffer, return to the underlying connection or source problem instead of assuming the largest possible cache will create missing media automatically.

An example to work through

For example, a stream may be stable until a laptop uploads a large folder. If pauses stop when that upload is suspended, investigate upload contention and queuing. Changing television motion smoothing would address a different stage and would not explain the clear relationship with the active upload.

Questions about this topic

Is low jitter the same as low latency?

No. Delay can be consistent yet large, or small on average but variable.

Will the biggest buffer always fix it?

No. Buffering stores received media and trades responsiveness for tolerance of short gaps.
