NXDOMAIN errors on a streaming address

NXDOMAIN reports that the queried DNS name does not exist in the resolver response. Read the explanation, worked example and practical next steps in the Pro Max journal.

The answer, with the useful detail.

NXDOMAIN is a DNS response indicating that the queried name does not exist according to that resolver answer. Check the hostname carefully before changing player settings. A typo, retired domain, filtering policy or cached negative response can affect the result. Record which name fails and compare through a supported diagnostic if available. Do not replace a hostname with a guessed IP address, because secure connections and delivery routing may depend on the original name being used correctly by the player.

Verify the exact hostname

Copy only the host portion into your private notes, excluding account paths and tokens. Compare it with the current address supplied through the trusted service channel. A stray character, pasted punctuation or old bookmark can point at a different name. Check whether the player reports NXDOMAIN explicitly rather than a generic connection failure. The distinction matters: an existing name without a particular address record and a completely nonexistent name are different DNS outcomes that simplified app messages may obscure.

Compare resolver and filtering context

Check whether the device uses router DNS, an app resolver or a VPN. A filtering resolver can deliberately block a name, and another device may have different settings even on the same Wi-Fi. Use administrator-approved diagnostics to compare the affected hostname. Do not paste a complete private playlist into a public lookup form. If policy is responsible, ask the authorised administrator to review that specific destination rather than disabling protections for the entire household or switching settings without understanding the effect.

Allow for cached negative answers

A resolver or application may retain a previous negative result for a limited period, so immediate repeated attempts need not reflect an updated authoritative record. Use the documented refresh or restart procedure if available and record when the address was changed. If the trusted current hostname still returns NXDOMAIN, contact the service with the name and timestamp. Player cache size, picture mode and broadband speed cannot create a missing DNS record, so focus the investigation on the naming and resolver stage first.

An example to work through

For example, a saved server name with one missing letter may return NXDOMAIN while other channels and websites work. Correcting it from trusted instructions addresses that naming error. Increasing the player buffer would have no effect because no connection to the intended host has yet been established.

Questions about this topic

Does NXDOMAIN prove my broadband is down?

No. The resolver has returned an answer about one queried name.

Should I use a guessed server IP instead?

No. Obtain the current supported hostname and endpoint from the service.
