The answer, with the useful detail.

On desktop VLC, Open Network Stream is the route for a supported media URL. Enter the complete authorised stream address rather than a website’s ordinary landing-page URL. This action opens media; it does not log into every provider portal or convert an arbitrary web page into a playable stream. Use the input action provided by your desktop edition and keep the entire authorised URL intact. Successful loading depends on a media endpoint VLC supports, current access and any required request context, not merely on a browser opening the site.

Use the right address

A link to a page describing a programme can differ from the media URL itself. Obtain the supported source from the responsible provider rather than scraping or guessing hidden addresses. Ask for a VLC-compatible media or playlist address if the issued details are a web portal or structured app login. A homepage returns navigation and scripts rather than necessarily returning media bytes. Do not infer an endpoint by appending account values to a hostname; an incorrect address can both fail to play and send sensitive information to a destination that was never intended to receive it.

Keep private URLs private

Some stream URLs contain credentials or temporary tokens. Treat the complete address as sensitive and avoid showing it in public screenshots or logs. Paste only the intended URL and inspect its beginning and ending for spaces or quotation marks copied from a message. Preserve explicit ports, paths and query values. If recording the screen for support, clear or redact the input field first. Playback history and diagnostic logs may retain portions of the address, so review those too before sharing troubleshooting evidence with anyone else.

Read the result by stage

If VLC cannot open the address, note whether it reports access, connection or format information. The exact message is more useful than repeatedly pressing Play without changing the input. Note whether the attempt fails immediately, loads a list or begins media and then stalls. These observations help separate input, access and later playback problems. Desktop menus differ by operating system, so use that edition's Open Network Stream action rather than expecting identical labels everywhere. If a temporary token has expired, obtain a fresh authorised address through the responsible provider instead of repeatedly replaying the stale one.

An example to work through

A provider’s homepage address can open in a browser yet fail as a media input because it is an HTML page rather than a stream. Obtain the supported media address through the responsible provider and use that in the network input. If it fails, record the exact error and stage without posting the full account-bearing URL or assuming the homepage should play.
