Playback and display

The answer, with the useful detail.

A television can report a 4K HDMI signal while the programme itself has lower source resolution. The connected box may upscale decoded video before output, so the display information describes its incoming signal rather than the original media dimensions. Check both player media information and TV input information where available. Keep resolution separate from bitrate, compression and HDR. A channel name containing 4K is not a measurement, and forcing a higher output mode cannot recover original captured detail absent from the source supplied to the player for that programme.

Read the source stage

Player diagnostics may show decoded width and height, selected rendition or coded resolution. Record those values while the actual programme plays, since adaptive selection can change. Do not use a menu resolution or thumbnail size as source evidence. Some apps expose no reliable media details; say that the source dimensions are unverified rather than inferring them from the television signal banner. A service can supply different versions to different clients, so another device showing the same title does not prove that this box receives the identical resolution or codec at that moment.

Read the output stage separately

The TV input display normally describes the signal arriving over HDMI, including dimensions and sometimes refresh rate or dynamic range. A box set to a fixed 2160p mode can output menus and lower-resolution programmes in that mode. Receivers or other processors may add another scaling stage. Check the actual chain and label each value accordingly. Matching output to content can alter where scaling happens, but support varies. Do not assume that a temporary blank screen during a documented format change means the internet dropped, since display negotiation can occur independently of media delivery.

Evaluate clarity with source limits in mind

Native dimensions are only one part of visible quality. Camera capture, compression, motion and bitrate can make two sources with the same pixel count look different. Compare a known appropriate reference without excessive sharpening or other processing changes. If the source is lower resolution, a supported higher rendition may add detail where legitimately available; an output toggle alone does not. If the source really is high resolution but looks poor, investigate compression or display settings rather than accusing the TV of a false panel specification based only on the softness of one programme.

An example to work through

For example, a box can decode a 720p stream and output it as 2160p HDMI. The TV correctly reports a 4K input signal, but that does not make the source native 4K. Reading the player dimensions explains the difference without suggesting that the display banner or the television itself must be defective or deceptive.

Questions about this topic

Does 4K output prove native 4K content?

No. Lower-resolution media can be scaled before output.

Can HDR status establish source resolution?

No. Dynamic range and pixel dimensions are separate properties.
