Fullscreen enlarges VLC’s presentation to occupy the display. It does not turn the source into a higher-resolution stream. If the enlarged image looks soft, inspect the actual media information and display scaling rather than treating the fullscreen control as a quality selector.
Separate window size and media detail
A small source can be scaled to fill a large display. The larger picture contains the same source information, even though the output screen has more pixels.
Use media information
Read the source’s reported dimensions where available. A 4K monitor setting and a 4K stream are different facts.
Return to a useful view
Choose windowed or fullscreen presentation for comfort. Do not add sharpening and crop overrides together merely to disguise an unsuitable source.

An example to work through
A 720p video can fill a 4K monitor in fullscreen while remaining a 720p source scaled for display.
