Playback needs sustained delivery for the actual source bitrate, plus enough capacity for other household traffic. This website does not publish a universal Mbps requirement for every HD or 4K stream.
How should I measure the connection?
- Test on the device or network path used for viewing.
- Repeat at the normal evening viewing time.
- Note whether the connection is Ethernet, Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Compare download stability while pausing large household transfers.
- Test actual playback alongside the speed result; a short peak test is not a sustained stream test.
Account for household use
Several viewers, cloud backups and video calls compete for capacity. Upload congestion can also affect responsiveness. Add up the real simultaneous usage rather than reserving a fixed number based only on a resolution label.
Separate Wi-Fi from the internet connection
If Ethernet is stable but Wi-Fi is not, investigate the radio path, interference and device placement. If both fail for only one source, investigate that source before buying a faster internet plan.
Keep the comparison useful
Record the test time, network type, result and playback symptom. Avoid changing player settings and network settings together; otherwise the result does not identify which change mattered.
