Double NAT occurs when a connection crosses two routers that each perform address translation. A common example is a personal router connected behind an ISP gateway while both remain in router mode. Ordinary outbound video can still work normally, so the label alone does not diagnose buffering. The arrangement can complicate inbound access, some discovery functions and applications that depend on particular connection behavior. Its significance depends on the actual task and the supported design of both routers, rather than simply on the number of boxes present.
Double NAT and Two Wi-Fi names
One router can broadcast several names without producing double NAT.
How it works
Each translating router maintains its own connection mappings and local network. Devices attached to different sides may therefore occupy separate subnets even when their Wi-Fi names look similar. A mesh product may also lose features if placed in a particular bridge mode. The manufacturer's guidance matters because removing one translation boundary can alter routing, security and network management together.
Recognizing the symptom
If public internet video plays but a phone cannot discover a receiver, examine whether the devices are actually on the same local network. That is a different symptom from a television running out of delivered media. Conversely, a slow second router or weak mesh link can cause performance trouble without address translation itself being the limiting factor in the path.
Making a useful comparison
Identify which device supplies routing, wireless access and address assignment before changing modes. Use a supported access-point or bridge arrangement when appropriate, and preserve required protections. Avoid turning off several functions blindly to remove a diagnostic label. Record the original configuration so a routine comparison can be reversed if it does not resolve the actual problem.
An illustrative example
A mesh router sits behind an ISP router, and a phone attached to the ISP Wi-Fi cannot discover a receiver attached to the mesh network. Streaming from the internet still works. The useful investigation concerns the separate local networks; upgrading a streaming subscription would not connect those discovery domains.
Practical actions
- Identify both devices
- Use supported access-point or bridge guidance
- Preserve security controls
