EPG mapping connects a playable channel entry to the guide identity whose programme records should be displayed with it. The player may use explicit identifiers, provider information, name matching or a manual association. A mapping is a relationship between two data sets rather than a change to the video stream or the programme times. Correct mapping must account for regional variants, languages and delayed versions that share similar branding. A channel can play perfectly yet show a blank or incorrect guide when that relationship is missing or points to the wrong schedule.
EPG mapping and Timezone offset
Mapping chooses the channel record; timezone interpretation determines when its programmes appear.
Automatic matching has limits
Name-based matching is convenient when metadata is incomplete, but punctuation, rebrands and duplicate names introduce ambiguity. Explicit stable identifiers can be more reliable when both sources use compatible values. A successful match still needs schedule data for the relevant dates. Do not assume every blank guide is a mapping failure merely because a manual mapping control is available.
Time-shifted channels need attention
A delayed channel may resemble its main service while broadcasting the same programme at another time. Assigning the main service’s guide without the intended supported handling can create a systematic mismatch. Regional news variations can also make two schedules diverge only during part of the day. Verify actual programme titles at distinctive times rather than checking only a shared morning show.
Correct one channel first
Record the existing association, select the intended guide record and verify current and later programmes. Check whether a playlist refresh preserves the assignment. If several entries share an incorrect identifier, fix the source metadata where practical instead of repeatedly correcting them one by one. Apply time adjustments only after confirming that the chosen schedule belongs to the right channel.
An illustrative example
A regional channel displays a national schedule because automatic matching used their similar names. Midday programmes look plausible, but the evening local bulletin is wrong. Selecting the correct regional guide identity fixes the titles and timing without requiring a global guide offset that would disrupt correctly mapped channels.
Practical actions
- Verify region, language and delayed variants before assigning a guide.
- Test a distinctive current and later programme.
- Check whether the corrected association survives refresh.
