Jitter is variation in the timing of arriving network data. A connection can have an acceptable average delay while occasionally delivering information much later than usual. Streaming players hold media in advance partly to absorb that unevenness. Problems arise when a gap lasts longer than the material available locally or when irregular delivery repeatedly prevents the buffer from recovering. Jitter is therefore about consistency, rather than simply how large the advertised speed is or how quickly one successful packet makes a round trip.
Jitter and Latency
Latency measures delay. Jitter measures how much that delay varies.
How it works
Wireless contention, changing queues and traffic on shared links can produce irregular arrival patterns. Reliable delivery may add further waiting while missing information is recovered. A player does not need every packet to arrive at identical intervals, but it needs enough complete media before the playback deadline. The available buffer determines how much variation can be hidden.
Recognizing the symptom
Short freezes that appear when another household device becomes active can justify a stability comparison. They do not prove jitter is the only cause: decoding overload or source discontinuities can also interrupt presentation. Distinguish a loading pause from visibly uneven motion that continues without waiting. The pattern and timing are more informative than a general description of bad quality.
Making a useful comparison
Keep the programme and player settings fixed while comparing Wi-Fi with a supported wired path. Alternatively, pause competing radio traffic for one controlled observation. If interruptions disappear, the local wireless path merits attention. Increasing the buffer can provide tolerance, but it also changes startup or live delay and should not replace investigation of persistent network instability.
An illustrative example
Most data arrives promptly, but a crowded wireless channel occasionally creates a long gap. A larger buffer hides a few gaps while a smaller one pauses sooner. This does not mean the larger setting improved the radio link; it gave playback more stored material to survive irregular delivery.
Practical actions
- Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi
- Reduce competing traffic
- Observe whether pauses follow activity
