The term in context.

A server URL tells a player which network endpoint to contact. It includes a scheme such as HTTPS, a hostname and sometimes a port or path. These parts matter: a marketing homepage is not necessarily an account endpoint, and removing a port can direct a request to another service. Some players expect a base address, while others accept a full playlist or API URL. The expected input depends on the selected login mode and supplied account record. Copy the address accurately rather than reconstructing it from the brand name or shortening it because part looks unnecessary.

Server URL and Username

The server URL chooses the destination; the username identifies an account at that destination.

Read the address in parts

In the illustrative address https://media.example.invalid:8443/service, HTTPS is the scheme, media.example.invalid is the hostname, 8443 is an explicit port and /service is a path. This reserved example does not offer a service. A missing colon, extra slash or internal space changes the request before any account check can take place.

Use the field's expected format

A field labelled server or portal can expect a different shape from one labelled playlist URL. Pasting a complete credential-bearing playlist into a base-server field can produce malformed requests. Conversely, stripping a required path from a full playlist removes the resource. Follow the documented input mode rather than applying one shortening rule to every address.

Separate reachability from account checks

An unreachable hostname, unsupported scheme and rejected account are different failures. Seeing the provider homepage in a browser proves only that the homepage is reachable. It does not validate a streaming endpoint or account. Record the error category and whether the catalogue loads, keeping secret query parameters out of public evidence.

An illustrative example

An account record specifies a server on port 8443. A viewer removes the port to make the address look simpler. The player now uses the default HTTPS port and may fail even though the hostname and password are unchanged.

Practical actions

  1. Copy the complete value for the selected login mode.
  2. Check protocol, port and path separately.
  3. Redact credential-bearing query parameters when sharing an address.
