The answer, with the useful detail.

ARC andeARC return audio from a TV to a compatible receiver or soundbar over HDMI. eARC supports a broader high-bandwidth audio path, but both ends, ports and configuration must be compatible. The source still determines what audio exists. Identify the labeled return-audio sockets and read the supported formats for the exact TV and audio system together. A successful HDMI picture does not establish that the reverse audio path is connected, enabled or able to carry the format selected for playback.

Use the labelled ports

An ordinary HDMI input may not provide return audio. Connect the TV's documented ARC or eARC socket to the matching receiver or soundbar socket. An ordinary input may carry forward video without providing the intended return function. Follow the manufacturers' setup guidance for relevant audio-output and control settings, since activation differs by model. Keep the connection labels recorded. If sound is missing, check that the TV has actually selected the external audio system rather than leaving an unused return connection attached.

CheckTV handling

Internal apps and external inputs can have different supported output paths. A TV may handle its internal apps differently from encoded sound arriving through an external HDMI source. Inspect the documentation for passthrough and decoded output on that exact route, not just the television's own speaker support. The receiving system also needs the selected codec and channel layout. If a supported simpler format works while another fails, the comparison helps isolate transport or handling limits without implying that the return-audio feature is entirely defective.

Avoid badge assumptions

An Atmos label does not describe every codec transport. Atmos describes an audio presentation that can be delivered through different underlying formats, so read the actual carrier and route requirements. The existence of an eARC socket does not create an Atmos track or guarantee that the application supplies one. Check the receiver's reported input and use a documented known-compatible item when diagnosing. Compare levels cautiously after format changes and retain a working stereo option while inspecting higher-bandwidth or more complex supported audio paths.

An example to work through

Video goes directly to the TV while its audio returns to the soundbar through the designatedeARC connection. An internal TV app produces supported surround audio, while an external box's different format is silent through the same return connection. That difference directs the investigation to the TV's handling of the external input and selected carrier, rather than proving the soundbar has stopped functioning.

Questions about this topic

Will eARC createAtmos from stereo?

No. The supplied media and decoder must provide the relevant presentation; the connection does not invent it.

AreARC andeARC identical?

No. Capabilities differ. Check the capabilities of both endpoints and the chosen audio format rather than treating the terms interchangeably.
