Clear cache removes temporary application files. Clear data resets the application’s stored state and can remove saved logins, playlists and preferences. For an app that suddenly misbehaves, start with a restart or cache clear. Before clearing data, make sure you can restore the account and any settings that matter. Choose the action according to the symptom and what you can recover. Cache clearing targets temporary files; data clearing is a configuration rebuild and requires a deliberate recovery plan first.

Use the narrower repair first

A stale thumbnail or temporary file does not justify erasing the whole configuration. Force-stop the app, clear its cache if available, reopen it and reproduce the original symptom before making a larger change. Cache files may be regenerated on the next launch, so the first opening can briefly need more loading work. Judge the original fault after that refresh rather than interpreting every new thumbnail download as failure. If playback credentials are still present, you have preserved the most costly part of the configuration while testing a narrower repair.

Prepare for a reset

A player may store its provider login, locally organised favourites and other settings in its data area. A provider subscription can remain active while the reset player has no account configured. Check whether the app offers its own backup and whether that backup contains credentials. Store it privately, and separately confirm access to the original provider details. A screenshot of a masked password field is not a recovery copy. Also note local favourites or custom groups that may not be recreated by merely signing into the same source again.

Judge the result

If clearing cache changes nothing, note that result. Repeatedly performing the same action hides whether another factor caused the problem. Clear data only when you have a reason to rebuild the player’s local state. Distinguish an empty fresh setup screen from a service outage after a reset: the former may simply need configuration. If data clearing fails to fix a reproducible fault, record the app and system versions and the exact failing action. Rebuilding the same state repeatedly adds work without showing whether the source, network or decoder is responsible.

An example to work through

A player with broken programme thumbnails might recover after a cache clear. Clearing data instead may also remove the saved playlist, creating a second problem. Try one cache clear and repeat the thumbnail-loading action. If the guide remains broken while channels play, investigate guide data before erasing a valid account configuration.

Questions about this topic

Does Clear data cancel my provider subscription?

It resets local app information; it does not itself cancel a provider’s account.

Should I send my password to a public forum before resetting?

No. Keep login and recovery information private.
