The answer, with the useful detail.

In a surround mix, much dialogue may use the centre channel. A disconnected centre speaker, wrong channel configuration or faulty downmix can make speech very quiet while music remains loud. Check the speaker layout and compare a supported stereo output. First determine whether the centre channel is absent physically or whether dialogue is being lost during routing. A safe receiver test tone and a supported stereo comparison answer different parts of that question without requiring a dangerously high master volume.

Check physical channels

Use the receiver test tone at a safe volume. Use the receiver's documented speaker test at a comfortable level and confirm that the centre speaker produces its own tone. Check its terminal connections with equipment handled according to the manual, and verify that the cable reaches the intended speaker. If the tone is missing while other channels work, investigate that physical path before blaming the soundtrack. Programme music playing loudly through left and right speakers does not establish that the centre connection is healthy.

Verify configuration

Do not select speakers that are not actually installed. Make the receiver's configured layout match the actual installed speakers. If there is no physical centre speaker, the system should use a supported configuration that routes its content appropriately rather than sending dialogue to an absent channel. Check source output layout too, because a multichannel assumption can survive a wiring change. Avoid arbitrary channel swaps as compensation; they can move effects and dialogue into incorrect positions while concealing the original configuration mistake.

Compare stereo

A proper downmix can reveal whether the surround path is the issue. Replay the same dialogue scene using a documented stereo PCM or proper two-speaker downmix. If voices return clearly, the supplied dialogue is present and the surround routing deserves attention. If one title alone remains wrong on several supported outputs, report that specific track and timestamp. Keep volume moderate throughout, since restoring the missing channel can suddenly add substantial speech energy to a level previously raised to compensate for its absence.

An example to work through

Music is audible from left and right, but dialogue disappears because the receiver expects a centre speaker that is absent. A receiver's centre test tone is silent while music plays normally in the main speakers. Correcting the centre connection restores speech in the same scene, showing why increasing master volume would only have made the already audible effects louder without repairing the missing channel.

Questions about this topic

Is this always a bad stream?

No. Wiring, layout configuration or downmix behavior can lose dialogue even when the source contains it.

Should master volume be maximized?

No. Fix the channel configuration first. Sound can return unexpectedly after the fault is corrected, so test at moderate levels.
