Standby keeps a television ready for quick use, restart reloads the operating system, and factory reset removes user configuration. They are not interchangeable troubleshooting steps. For an unexplained temporary fault, use a supported restart before considering a reset that would require accounts and applications to be set up again. Identify which device hosts the player before choosing the command. Resetting a television used only as an HDMI display can erase its settings while leaving a frozen external player process completely untouched.
Recognise standby
A short press of the power button may place the TV in standby without fully restarting its software. A problem can therefore remain after apparently turning the screen off and on. Look for whether the device resumes instantly into the same app or shows a complete boot sequence, but use its documented controls to confirm the action. Some sets maintain network connections or background activity while the panel is off. Screen darkness is therefore not evidence that every process has restarted or a stuck application has been closed.
Choose a real restart
Use the Settings restart command or the manufacturer’s documented power-cycle procedure. Avoid interrupting an update and distinguish restarting the TV from restarting a separate HDMI box. Save or end any active task first if the interface still responds. Then restart the device actually running the player and allow it to complete startup before opening the app. Use a documented power-cycle only when appropriate for that device; repeated rapid unplugging can make it harder to distinguish a normal cold start from a persistent application fault.
Reserve factory reset for a reason
A factory reset can remove household accounts, Wi-Fi details and player configuration. Prepare recovery information and follow manufacturer support guidance before taking that broad step. List what will need rebuilding: network connection, household store account, player installation, software entitlement and authorised source details. Confirm access to recovery accounts before proceeding. A factory reset does not renew the streaming service or change the platform family, and it should not be assumed to remove a compatibility limit such as an unsupported operating-system version.

An example to work through
Turning off a television’s display may leave an HDMI box running; restarting the TV alone would not restart the player device. Identify whether the frozen interface belongs to the box or the screen. Use that device's restart command first, and preserve recovery information before considering any factory reset that erases its configuration.
Questions about this topic
Does restart erase all my applications?
A normal restart should not perform a factory reset.
Is factory reset the first step for one frozen app?
No. Force stop or restart is usually a narrower first intervention.
