The answer, with the useful detail.

Stereo PCM is a useful supported comparison when compressed surround output is silent or unreliable. It lets the source device decode or mix audio before sending ordinary two-channel sound. Use it as a diagnostic choice, not a claim that surround is always defective. Keep the same scene, volume and physical connection during the test, then check whether dialogue returns. A successful stereo PCM comparison points toward compressed-format transport, decoding or layout handling rather than establishing that the original source has no usable soundtrack.

Understand the tradeoff

The test can remove surround output while preserving audible dialogue. Stereo PCM sends decoded two-channel samples, so the test can bypass the need for a downstream device to decode the original compressed track. If the source is multichannel, the device may also downmix it, depending on supported settings. This changes more than a label: surround positioning may be reduced. Use a dialogue scene to check compatibility, and record the original mode so the desired channel layout can be revisited after diagnosis.

Check actual support

Menu names and available conversion vary by device. Look for the exact output option documented by the source, TV or player, because automatic, PCM and passthrough controls do not mean identical things on every model. Some devices decode only particular codecs, and some digital connections accept only certain channel counts. Confirm that stereo PCM is supported at the destination before using it as a control. A menu checkbox alone does not establish that conversion from every possible source track is available.

Restore intentionally

After identifying the issue, use the best compatible format for the real setup. If the test works, inspect each link that carried the original encoded audio: player output, television passthrough, return connection and receiver decoding. Restore a documented compatible surround arrangement only after identifying its requirements. If stereo PCM is the intended permanent configuration for two speakers, keep it deliberately rather than treating it as an emergency setting. Compare comfortable matched levels, since changing the decoding stage can also change the apparent loudness.

An example to work through

A soundbar receives PCM successfully while an unsupported bitstream produces silence. Dialogue returns immediately when the box supplies supported stereo PCM instead of the silent encoded output. The result demonstrates a usable decoded path, but further checks are needed to identify which device rejected the original bitstream and whether a supported surround route can be restored.

Questions about this topic

DoesPCM mean poor quality?

No. It describes uncompressed samples. It is a representation of decoded audio, not a blanket verdict on fidelity.

Will it create surround speakers?

No. A two-channel test does not generate additional physical channels or original surround information.
