Audio and subtitles

The answer, with the useful detail.

A preferred subtitle language is a selection rule, not a guarantee. A source can lack the language, carry inaccurate labels or use a track type the player treats differently. Inspect the current track before assuming the preference has been forgotten. Test the preference on an item that actually contains the required language and track type. If selection works there, inspect availability, metadata or a remembered manual choice on the exceptional title instead of treating every difference as a global settings failure.

Check availability

No preference creates a missing translation. Open the subtitle list for the affected title and confirm whether the preferred language is supplied at all. Then compare a known title with that language available. A selection rule cannot choose an absent track, and a generic language label may hide differences between full captions and a forced translation track. Record the visible choices before changing anything, so an availability issue can be distinguished from an application that ignores a valid supplied option.

Distinguish track types

Forced and full captions can be selected differently. Look for track-purpose labels and compare a normal dialogue scene with a scene requiring a brief translation. A forced track may contain no text through long passages, while a full or hearing-access track should serve another purpose. Some apps prioritize purpose metadata alongside language; others expose fewer choices. If a suitable full track is present but the app keeps selecting an unsuitable one, report the labels and selection sequence rather than assuming all subtitle data is missing.

Review saved state

A previous per-title choice may override a global preference. Check whether the profile, device or individual title remembers a previous manual selection. Change the supported preference in the intended scope, then restart one title and inspect the chosen track. Clearing all application data can discard useful profiles and still leave remote preferences unchanged. Use a narrow reset where available and document which layer appears to override the general setting, especially on a shared device where viewers legitimately use different languages or caption types.

An example to work through

The app chooses no captions because the preferred language is absent from that episode. The default language is present on one film only as a forced translation track, while another film supplies full captions in that language. Their different behavior reflects different available tracks, so the viewer checks purpose and saved selection before deciding the global preference is broken.

Questions about this topic

Is the setting always broken?

No. Availability and remembered choices can explain exceptions even when the general preference operates as designed.

Should all app data be cleared?

Not as the first step. Inspect the affected track and preference scope before discarding unrelated account and viewing settings.
