The answer, with the useful detail.

Some subtitle timing was prepared against a different playback rate or conversion. The resulting gap can grow throughout a programme. A fixed delay only shifts the whole timeline; it does not correct a rate mismatch. Prefer subtitles matched to the exact release. Measure the subtitle gap at several widely separated scenes before changing a fixed delay. A consistent proportional increase can indicate different timing rates, while an abrupt shift after one added scene is a different edition problem and needs another approach.

Check multiple points

Compare the opening, middle and end. Record an early, middle and late cue with the subtitle offset reset to its original value. Note whether captions increasingly lead or increasingly follow the spoken lines. A steadily growing difference is useful evidence that subtitle time and video time are progressing at different effective rates. Do not use a single translated word as the only reference, because translation can rearrange wording; choose a recognizable line start with a clear corresponding spoken moment.

Distinguish cuts

Missing scenes cause a different pattern from steady rate drift. Compare edition and runtime information, looking for missing scenes or alternate openings as well as a possible playback-rate conversion. A subtitle set prepared for a differently timed release can drift even when the story scenes are otherwise identical. A cut mismatch often causes a sudden step instead of smooth growth. Avoid concluding that the player's clock is faulty until the supplied subtitle source and the exact video edition have been checked together.

Convert only legitimate files

Use trusted tools and preserve the original. For a legitimate personal subtitle file, use a trusted editor that supports timing-rate conversion rather than only shifting all cues. Preserve the original and verify the converted result at the same early, middle and late points. A rate adjustment changes spacing across the timeline, while an offset changes the origin; some material may require both, and scene edits remain separate. Prefer a correctly matched supplied track when available instead of guessing conversion values from a filename.

An example to work through

A subtitle prepared for one film-speed conversion becomes progressively late on another version. The opening needs almost no correction, while later scenes need progressively larger shifts in the same direction. A trusted timing conversion aligns all three check points on a personal copy, whereas adding one fixed delay would simply move the place in the film where the captions happen to match.

Questions about this topic

Will one delay value fix every point?

No. A fixed shift cannot cancel a rate difference that accumulates as the programme advances.

Is this always the player fault?

No. The subtitle source can be mismatched. The subtitle timing may have been prepared for a different conversion or release.
