The term in context.

A channel identifier is a stable value used to refer to a channel across related records. In XMLTV, a channel element has an id and programme records refer to that value through their channel attribute. A media player may associate a playlist entry with the same guide identity using supported metadata or a manual mapping. The identifier is distinct from a display name, channel number or stream URL. Those visible or transport details can change while identity remains stable, and similar names can belong to different regional or time-shifted services.

Channel identifier and Channel number

A displayed channel number is a navigation choice; an identifier links data records.

A join key connects the records

Guide software uses identifiers to connect schedules with the correct channel. Playlist metadata conventions such as a guide-related ID can provide the other side of that relationship when the player supports them. The exact value matters: substituting a friendly name may not match the guide’s identifier. A valid-looking identifier also needs a corresponding schedule record in the selected guide source.

Names are convenient but ambiguous

Several channels may share a brand while differing by region, language, resolution or delayed schedule. Automatic matching by display name can attach the wrong guide. Conversely, a rebrand can change the visible name without requiring a new identity. Do not infer an identifier from a logo or number alone when the source provides an authoritative value to use.

Trace one channel end to end

Choose an affected playlist entry and record its guide-related identifier. Find the corresponding channel record in the guide, then check programme records referring to that value. If the guide exists under a different ID, correct the supported mapping rather than shifting times. If no programmes reference the ID, a successful identity match still cannot display absent schedule data.

An illustrative example

Two regional channels share the display name “City News.” Their identifiers differ because their evening programmes differ. Matching by name attaches the wrong regional schedule to one stream. Using the appropriate guide identifier fixes the relationship without changing either channel’s displayed name or its media address.

Practical actions

  1. Compare the exact playlist and guide identifier values.
  2. Check regional and time-shifted variants before mapping.
  3. Verify programme records actually reference the chosen guide ID.
