Closed captions are captions that the viewer can turn on or off through a supported playback or receiving system. “Closed” describes this selectable presentation, not the quality of the text or whether it is stored inside the media container. Closed captions can be delivered through different caption systems or separate text resources. Their purpose is to represent speech and relevant sound information in time with the programme. Successful use requires both source caption data and a player capable of discovering, decoding and displaying that particular delivery format.
Closed captions and Open captions
Open captions are permanently included in the presentation and cannot ordinarily be switched off.
Selectable does not mean sidecar
Caption data may travel within a broadcast or media stream, or arrive as a separate resource referenced by the programme. Both can remain closed when the viewer controls their display. A separate file is therefore not required by the term. Conversely, selectable text is not automatically a complete accessibility caption track if it contains only dialogue translation.
Preferences depend on the player
A television’s general caption preference may apply to its own tuner or supported apps without controlling every external player. Some applications manage captions internally, while others honour system settings. If a setting appears ineffective, locate the control belonging to the active playback path. Do not assume that changing the television’s broadcast caption menu will alter an unrelated app’s subtitle selection.
Determine whether data is present
Check the current item’s caption menu and select a known available track. Compare another programme through the same player to separate a source omission from a display problem. If the track is listed but remains blank, inspect timing and format support. Open captions burned into the picture cannot be disabled through the same switch, even if selectable captions also exist.
An illustrative example
A viewer turns on the television’s broadcast captions, but an external streaming app remains unchanged. The app has its own caption menu and a supplied text track. Enabling that track displays captions, showing why the relevant control follows the active playback system rather than every screen-wide setting.
Practical actions
- Find the caption control for the active app or input.
- Confirm the current programme supplies a selectable caption track.
- Compare another captioned item before changing device-wide settings.
