The term in context.

HDMI Audio Return Channel, usually called ARC, allows a television to send sound back to a compatible receiver or soundbar through a designated HDMI connection. It is useful for television apps and other audio that reaches the TV first. ARC is a specific return-audio feature, not a property of every HDMI socket. Supported audio formats and channel arrangements depend on both devices and their settings. It generally has more limited capability than eARC, so an HDMI video connection working correctly does not prove every audio format can return through it.

HDMI ARC and HDMI input

A regular input receives source audio and video; ARC adds a return-audio path from the television.

Use the designated ports

The television and audio system usually identify the sockets intended for ARC. The soundbar’s ARC socket can differ in role from its ordinary source inputs. Many implementations also require appropriate control or audio-output settings. Check the device documentation for the actual connection sequence, rather than assuming any HDMI port can carry television sound back to the sound system.

Format support has boundaries

Stereo PCM and supported compressed surround are common ARC uses, but capability should be verified for the particular equipment. Multichannel PCM or higher-bitrate formats may require a different supported route. Dolby Atmos is not a single transport requirement: some compatible compressed presentations can work on certain ARC systems, while other Atmos delivery forms exceed their capabilities.

Compare internal and external sources

A television may return sound from its own app but handle an external HDMI source differently. Test both if the failure depends on the source. Read the receiver’s incoming format and compare a supported PCM setting. If sound fails completely, check port assignment and output selection before changing codecs. Successful video alone does not establish successful return-audio negotiation.

An illustrative example

A television app sends supported compressed surround to a soundbar over ARC. An external player then outputs multichannel PCM, which the same return route cannot accept in that setup. Stereo PCM works, showing that the cable carries return audio while the selected multichannel format remains beyond the route’s supported capability.

Practical actions

  1. Connect the sockets specifically marked for ARC.
  2. Check return-audio formats in both device manuals.
  3. Compare a TV app and an external HDMI source.
