The term in context.

HTTP 401 Unauthorized means the request lacks valid authentication credentials for the target resource. Despite its everyday wording, this status primarily concerns establishing the requester's authenticated access, rather than a general statement that the internet connection failed. A server returning 401 supplies an authentication challenge identifying an applicable scheme. A player may encounter it when credentials are missing, a session expires or a required token is no longer valid. The status identifies the authentication stage; it does not reveal which account field, token exchange or service component caused that stage to fail.

HTTP 401 and HTTP 403

401 concerns authentication requirements; 403 describes a server refusing a request it understood.

Where authentication can be lost

A catalogue and its media can use separate endpoints or short-lived access credentials. Signing into the interface successfully does not guarantee that every later resource request carries valid authentication. An app may need its supported session-renewal flow. Repeatedly replaying an old signed resource address can keep returning 401 even when the account itself is active and correctly entered elsewhere.

Making a useful recovery attempt

Check the complete configured server address and use the application's documented sign-in or account-refresh process. Confirm that a saved password has not been changed through the provider's official account interface. Record whether the failure affects all resources or only one operation. Avoid publishing logs containing credentials or tokens, since those details can appear alongside the status being investigated.

Distinguishing 401 from 403

401 indicates that valid authentication is required or absent for the request. 403 means the server understood the request and refuses to fulfill it, which can involve authorization or other policy. Neither status is repaired by increasing the player buffer. If authentication renewal consistently fails, support needs the timestamp and affected operation rather than a series of unrelated network resets.

An illustrative example

A live channel stops after a session has been idle, and the next media request returns 401. The app's supported sign-in renewal restores playback. This is consistent with an expired authentication context; it does not prove that the subscription expired or that every saved password on the device needs replacing.

Practical actions

  1. Use the supported authentication renewal
  2. Verify the configured service address
  3. Report the operation and 401 timestamp
