The term in context.

Keyboard focus identifies the interface control that currently receives keyboard input, or analogous directional remote input in a television interface. A visible focus indicator helps a user predict what Enter, the centre button or another activation key will do. Focus differs from a mouse pointer’s position and from a persistent selected state, such as the channel currently playing. Accessible navigation requires controls to be reachable in a sensible order and focus to move predictably. An interface that works with a mouse can still fail for keyboard or remote users.

Keyboard focus and Pointer hover

Hover shows pointer position; focus marks the active keyboard or remote target.

Movement and activation are different

Directional keys usually move focus while an activation key operates the focused control, subject to the app’s conventions. A focused channel card may therefore differ from the channel already selected for playback. The interface should make those states clear. Losing the focus indicator creates uncertainty even if input is technically still reaching an element somewhere on the screen.

Overlays can disrupt the path

When a dialog opens, focus should enter an appropriate control and remain usable. Closing it should return the user to a logical location. A menu that traps focus, skips essential buttons or sends it behind the overlay can block a task. Accessibility focus used by a screen reader also needs consideration, because it is related to but not always identical to keyboard focus.

Test without the pointer

Navigate from the initial screen using only the intended keyboard or remote. Open settings, change a track, dismiss dialogs and return to the item. Observe whether every focused control is visible, reachable and operable. If focus disappears after a specific action, record that transition. Repeatedly pressing directional keys without knowing the current target can hide a reproducible navigation defect.

An illustrative example

A subtitle dialog opens with focus left on the video behind it. Directional keys change hidden playback controls while the visible language options cannot be reached. Moving initial focus into the dialog and restoring it on close makes the same task predictable for remote and keyboard users.

Practical actions

  1. Complete key tasks using only the intended remote or keyboard.
  2. Check focus entry and return for each dialog.
  3. Verify focused and selected states are visually distinguishable.
