Overscan is a display setting that enlarges an incoming picture enough to hide its outer edges. It originated in television systems where edge irregularities were not intended to be visible. On a modern digital connection, it can unnecessarily crop menus, captions, logos and scoreboards. The relevant controls may be called screen fit, just scan, full pixel or a manufacturer-specific name. Overscan is separate from the player’s chosen film aspect ratio.
Overscan and Video crop
Overscan is display-side enlargement; a video can also be deliberately cropped before delivery.
Why a menu can lose its edges
A streaming box may produce a complete 1920×1080 or 3840×2160 desktop-like image. If the television zooms this slightly, the device still thinks every pixel is visible. Buttons positioned at the edge then disappear even though the application layout is correct. Changing font size does not restore the missing screen area.
Settings can vary by input
Televisions often remember picture-size settings separately for HDMI inputs, signal types or modes. A built-in app may fit correctly while an external box is cropped. A receiver or additional video processor can also introduce scaling. Evaluate the actual input path rather than assuming one television setting covers every source.
Separate display cropping from a film crop
Overscan tends to cut the complete interface and many programmes. A source-specific zoom affects only selected playback or a particular player. If a television offers one-to-one pixel display for the active mode, that provides a useful reference. Avoid compensating for television cropping by shrinking every application unnecessarily.
An illustrative example
The right side of a settings button and part of a channel logo are missing on an external box. The same app looks complete on another display. Selecting the television’s screen-fit mode reveals the full interface without changing the stream or reinstalling the player.
Practical actions
- Inspect the device home screen and an edge-to-edge test image for cropping.
- Select the television’s documented screen-fit or full-pixel option for that HDMI input.
- Review player zoom only after the entire device interface fits correctly.
